The factory extractor on your M&P is a solid piece, but it’s also one of those parts that can cause headaches when you least expect it—especially under heavy use or with certain ammunition. This Failure Resistant Extractor (FRE) is a direct drop-in replacement that solves the most common extraction issues: inconsistent ejection, failures to extract, and that nagging feeling that your gun might hiccup at the wrong time. Machined from a billet of heat-treated stainless steel with a custom extractor hook geometry cut by wire EDM, this part is built to keep working when things get dirty, hot, or just plain hard on your gun.
Compatibility
- Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0 (all calibers except 10mm — see below)
- Smith & Wesson M&P 1.0 (9mm, .40, .357 SIG)
- Smith & Wesson M&P Shield M2.0 (9mm, .40)
- Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus
- Smith & Wesson M&P Compact, Full Size, and Performance Center models
- For 10mm M&P M2.0: This extractor is specifically designed for 10mm variants. The hook geometry is optimized for the larger case head and helps with both feeding and extraction. It also includes a replacement Extractor Pivot Pin.
Key Features
- Drop-in fit: No filing, fitting, or slide modifications required. Remove the old extractor, install this one, and go.
- Wire EDM hook geometry: The critical engagement surface is machined with extreme precision for consistent grip on the case rim.
- Heat-treated stainless steel: Resists wear, corrosion, and deformation better than the factory MIM part.
- Improves reliability: Reduces failures to extract and helps with positive ejection, especially with mixed or cheaper ammo.
- Includes extractor pivot pin (10mm version only): Fresh pin ensures proper tension and alignment.
Install Difficulty: 2 out of 5
This is a straightforward swap if you’re comfortable field-stripping your M&P. You’ll need a punch (1/16″ or similar) to drift out the extractor pivot pin, and maybe a small pick or tweezers to handle the extractor spring and plunger. The whole job takes about 10 minutes. If you’ve never done it, watch one of our install videos on the product page — it’s harder to mess up than to get right.
FAQ
Will this fix my M&P that won’t eject spent casings?
If your gun is failing to extract (stovepipes, double-feeds, or the extractor slips off the rim), this extractor is a likely fix. It’s especially helpful if you’ve already cleaned and lubed the gun and the problem persists. It won’t solve issues caused by bad magazines, weak recoil springs, or out-of-spec ammo, but it addresses the most common mechanical cause.
Do I need to change my extractor spring or plunger?
Not required, but we recommend inspecting them while you’re in there. If the spring looks rusty or the plunger tip is chipped, replace them. The extractor itself is the main upgrade, but fresh springs are cheap insurance.
Will this work in my M&P 2.0 10mm with an optic cut?
Yes. The 10mm version of this extractor is designed for the M&P M2.0 10mm, including optic-ready models. It includes the replacement pivot pin, which is a nice bonus since that pin can get chewed up over time. The
