Fully Machined Sear
If you’re building a Smith & Wesson M&P pistol for serious range work or personal defense, the trigger is where most of the noticeable improvement lives. A fully machined sear is the component that directly controls the break, overtravel, and reset feel—and swapping the factory MIM (metal-injection-molded) part for a precision-machined one is one of the most straightforward upgrades you can make. Our customers are typically handgun owners who want a cleaner, more predictable trigger pull without replacing the entire trigger shoe or frame components. They’re looking for a drop-in solution that doesn’t require a gunsmith, and they want to know exactly what changes to expect at the range.
A fully machined sear differs from a stock sear in both material and geometry. Where the factory part often has rough edges and inconsistent engagement surfaces, a machined sear is cut from bar stock (usually tool steel or stainless) with precisely ground engagement angles. The result is a trigger break that feels more like a glass rod snapping than a gritty mush. You’ll also see a shorter reset—the trigger comes forward less distance before it’s ready to fire again—which helps with fast follow-up shots. Most of these kits are designed to work with the factory trigger return spring and striker block, so you can install them in about fifteen minutes with a punch and a small hammer. We include a link to our install video with every sear purchase so you can watch the process before you start.
If you’re working on a Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0, you’ll find that the sear geometry is slightly different from the first-generation M&P. The 2.0 has a revised frame and trigger housing, but the sear block itself is interchangeable with careful fitting. We recommend sticking with sears specifically marked for the 2.0 to avoid light primer strikes or inconsistent reset. For owners of the original M&P 1.0, the same sear will work, but you may need to adjust the sear spring tension if you’ve already swapped your trigger shoe. If you’re unsure about compatibility, give us a call—we’re a family-run shop and we’re happy to talk through your build over the phone.
Compatibility
This category covers sears for the Smith & Wesson M&P line (1.0, 2.0, and Shield Plus models with the hinged trigger). They are not compatible with the M&P Shield 1.0 or the full-size M&P 9/40 without the thumb safety—those use a different sear housing. All sears here are drop-in with no permanent modification required, and they’re backed by the manufacturer’s warranty against material or machining defects. If you run into fitment issues, we’ll help you troubleshoot or exchange the part.
