Is the 3D-printed version as good as the aluminum one?

Actually, the 3D polymer version is better than the aluminum version. It grips the barrel without scratching the finish, and the material is stiff enough to hold alignment but has just a little flex so it doesn’t dent or damage the barrel if you apply pressure.

Can I use this with a file I already have?

Yes, as long as your file is flat and sharp. A worn-out or rounded file will make poor cuts and could ruin the barrel fit. We sell a 6-inch barrel fitting file that’s ground specifically for this work — it’s a good investment if you plan to fit more than one barrel.

Do I need any other tools besides this fixture and a file?

You’ll want a vise or clamp to hold the fixture steady, a good light so you can see the barrel’s contact surfaces, and some way to check barrel-to-slide fit (like feeler gauges or just careful assembly and disassembly). A little oil on the file helps too.
